The Courses

BLS Provider CPR courses are for those that require CPR certification for their job or for those who want to acquire the knowledge of a life saving skill. This course is designed to teach lay rescuers the lifesaving skills of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and relief of choking in adults, children and infants, as well as how to use an automated external defibrillator (AED) with both adults and children.

In the First Aid course you will learn the essential skills of patient care to protect and support the life of a suddenly ill or injured person until emergency medical services arrive. Instruction will cover first aid skills such as those that help in the control of bleeding, shock management, stabilizing fractures and dislocations.

The Instructor

Hello, I am Teresa. I am a certified CPR and First Aid instructor with the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Canada and have been working as an instructor since 2012. I certify doctors, nurses, EMS, Care givers, dental assistants and more. I found a passion for CPR shortly after my aunt passed away due to a stroke. As heart disease and strokes runs in my family I took the initiative to learn valuable life saving skills.

I truly enjoy working with people and teaching them the skills I have learned through the Heart & Stroke Foundation.  In addition, as a mother of two, skier, volunteer ski patrol and a hiker, I feel that Standard First Aid is also valuable skill everyone should know. I believe it is also essential for businesses to have at least one staff member certified for First Aid and CPR.

Definitions

Cardiac arrest is a medical emergency and can strike without warning, affecting people of all ages and all fitness levels. If you see someone collapse and is unresponsive, call 9-1-1 or your local emergency number and do CPR immediately and, if available, use an AED until medical help arrives. If this treatment is done within the first few minutes of a cardiac arrest, it can save a life!

First aid is the first step in the process of assessing and addressing the medical needs of someone who has been injured or is in distress due to aheart attack, stroke, choking, or other medical emergencies. Being trained in first aid techniques allows you to determine the immediate course of treatment required until advanced medical help arrives.

CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) is an emergency procedure that is used to restore blood flow to someone who is having cardiac arrest. Without proper blood flow, the brain and organs can be seriously damaged and the person can die within minutes if not treated immediately. CPR can help maintain blood flow and ventilation for a short period of time in a person experiencing cardiac arrest.

AED (Automated External Defibrillator) is a device that is used to get a heart back to its natural rhythms by delivering an electrical shock to the heart during a cardiac arrest. You can find AEDs in malls, community centres, and other public places. Go to                                        for the Public Access Defibrillator (PAD) program designed by Alberta Health Services and the Heart and Stroke Foundations to locate AEDs in your area.
